Is was established on 1 December 1973 as Garhwal University. In 1989. It was renamed as Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University. In 2009, it became a Central University. The Academic Council is Principal academic body of the University and exercise general supervion over the academic policies of the University.
